  [1st Reading – Is.55:10-11; Ps.64; 2nd Reading – Rom.8:18-23; Gospel – Mt.13:1-23]

Jesus said…

… some seeds fell on the edge of the path, and the birds came and ate them up…

He explained:

… When anyone hears the word of the kingdom without understanding, the evil one comes and carries off what was sown in his heart: this is the man who received the seed on the edge of the path.

Jesus said…

… some fell on patches of rock where they found little soil and sprang up straight away, because there was no depth of earth; but as soon as the sun came up they were scorched and, not having any roots, they withered away.

He explained:

… The one who received it on patches of rock is the man who hears the word and welcomes it at once with joy. But he has no root in him, he does not last; let some trial come, or some persecution on account of the word, and he falls away at once.

Jesus said…

… some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.

He explained:

… The one who received the seed in thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this world and the lure of riches choke the word and so he produces nothing.

Jesus said…

… some fell on rich soil and produced their crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

He explained:

… some fell on rich soil and produced their crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

On hearing today’s gospel, it would be interesting if we can stop for a moment and consider where we stand in our “hearing” the word of God. How do we listen to and in what manner do we accept the word of God?

Have the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven been revealed to us?  Or are we still being spoken to in parables?  Do we look without seeing?  Do we listen without hearing or understanding?  Jesus is challenging us: Are we going to let the word that comes out from God’s mouth return back to him without leaving the desired effect on us???

“Lord, open our hearts, our ears and our eyes so that we can see your presence, hear your word and understand what you want to tell us so that we can change our life and open up to you and let you heal us.  Thank you Lord!”
